Michael Vaughan

On September 12, 2005, Michael Vaughan secured his place in English sporting history by becoming the first captain to win an Ashes series since Mike Gatting in 1986-87. It was the culmination of a five-year journey for Vaughan, whose captaincy - calm, obdurate and ruthlessly effective - had become as classy and composed as the batting technique that carried him to the top of the world rankings. He led England the most times in Test Matches and went on to play 82 Test matches in total, scoring 5719 runs at an average of 41.44. This included 18 centuries and a highest score of 197. Vaughan was named as Wisden Cricketer of the year in 2003 and received an OBE in 2005.

Saqlain Mushtaq

A trend-setter. Saqlain Mushtaq was perhaps the first offspinner to master the doosra, a delivery that spins away from the batsman even though it is delivered with an offspinner's action. Saqlain's international career got off to a splendid start, when he became the fastest bowler to 100 one-day wickets, but his finest moment arguably came in a Test match, at Chennai in 1998-99, when his ten-wickets allowed Pakistan to sneak nerve-tingling 12-run win against India. He went on to play 49 Test matches, taking 208 wickets at an average of 29.83. He also played 169 One Day Internationals taking 288 wickets and played 11 years of county cricket for Surrey. He was named as Wisden Cricketer of the year in 2000.
