Gala Golf Classic 2018

Gala Golf Classic 2018

Our annual Gala Golf Classic moves to Royal Birkdale for 2018, which held the Open Golf Championship in 2017!

Our annual Gala Golf Classic goes from strength to strength, with last year’s event at Hoylake attracting 70 golfers who enjoyed a cracking schedule with former Premier League and England players Les Ferdinand and Rob Lee. This year we move to the incredible Royal Birkdale Golf Club, which has hosted the British Open on no less than ten occasions, including in 2017 which was memorably won by brilliant young American Jordan Speith. This is your chance to tread the same fairways and greens as these golfing legends, with our very special guest, the Premier League managerial legend, Harry Redknapp! With a Gala dinner to follow an afternoon of golf, this is an event not to be missed, and Harry will no doubt have plenty of great tales to tell from his long career as one of football’s most enduring managers and colourful characters.

Royal Birkdale Golf Club: Royal Birkdale Golf Club is located in Southport, Merseyside, and is one of England’s finest and most celebrated courses. It is one of the clubs in the rotation for both the Open Championship and Women's British Open and has hosted the Open Championship on no less than ten occasions from 1954 through 2017, as well as two Ryder Cups. Winners of the Open at the course include Pádraig Harrington, Mark O'Meara, Ian Baker-Finch, Tom Watson, Johnny Miller, Lee Trevino, Arnold Palmer, Peter Thomson (twice) and Jordan Spieth. On 22 July 2017, in the third round of the 2017 Open Championship, Branden Grace became the first man in major championship history to record a score of 62 in a single round. His compatriot Speith performed brilliantly across all four rounds, shooting 65-69-65-69 for a total of 268, finishing 12 under par and leading from pillar to post to lift the famous Claret Jug for the first time.

Harry Redknapp: Having cut his managerial teeth at Bournemouth, Harry established West Ham in the Premier League, introducing future internationals such as Rio Ferdinand, Joe Cole, Michael Carrick and nephew Frank Lampard. Harry’s reputation as a ‘wheeler-dealer’ was cemented at Upton Park, bringing in the likes of Stuart Pearce, Trevor Sinclair and the mercurial genius Paolo Di Canio. Throughout his career Harry has been a specialist in saving clubs from the dreaded drop, earning himself the nickname ‘Houdini’ after conjuring a series of unlikely escapes from relegation. He lifted the FA Cup with Portsmouth in 2008, beating Cardiff City in the Final, before going on to lead Spurs out of the doldrums; numerous highlights included two fourth place Premier League finishes, winning Manager of the Year in his first full season, and reaching the quarter finals of the Champions League. Despite his successes Harry was sacked in June 2012 after failing to agree a new contract, following much speculation that he would take the England job. After taking over at QPR in November 2012, he led them back to the Premier League, before ill health forced his resignation in 2015. One of the finest English managers of recent years, he remains one of the game’s most colourful characters.

Pete Graves: A passionate Newcastle United fan, Pete has enjoyed a swift rise through the broadcasting ranks to become one of the most recognisable faces on Sky Sports. After leaving university, Pete started his broadcasting career with the hospital radio show Radio Tyneside, before working in the local Metro Radio, and then ITV Tyneside as a sports reporter. Since 2009 he has worked at Sky Sports, mainly as a presenter, where his passion for football and knowledge of the game are amongst his greatest assets.

The Ramada Plaza Southport: This modern waterfront 4* hotel next to the Southport Theatre is just 3 miles from Royal Birkdale Golf Club, offering a convenient location for this year’s event, with great views over Marine Lake. Minifridges and coffeemakers are offered in each understated room, as well as complimentary WiFi and flat-screen TVs. A full English or continental buffet breakfast is included in your package, and we have use of the hotel’s foremost banqueting room, the Hesketh Suite, for our Gala Dinner with Harry Redknapp in the evening. There’s also a business centre and conference facilities should any of our clients require a meeting space, plus underground parking available.
