Olympic Glory and Cruiserweight Dominance
Before he ever stepped into the ring as a professional, Oleksandr Usyk had already laid the foundations for greatness with a glittering amateur career. His crowning achievement came at the London 2012 Olympics, where he claimed gold in the heavyweight division (91kg), showcasing a rare blend of agility, timing, and ring IQ that would become his trademark. That Olympic triumph followed his victory at the 2008 European Championships and the 2009 World Amateur Championships, solidifying his reputation as one of the most technically gifted amateurs of his generation.
Turning professional in 2013, Usyk entered the cruiserweight division with a clear mission: total domination. In just his tenth fight, he captured the WBO Cruiserweight Title, defeating Krzysztof Głowacki with a masterclass in movement and control. What followed was an audacious and unprecedented run through the World Boxing Super Series (WBSS) between 2017 and 2018—a tournament designed to unify the division. Usyk swept past Marco Huck, Mairis Briedis, and Murat Gassiev, becoming the first fighter in cruiserweight history to unify all four major world titles under the current belt system. He also won the Muhammad Ali Trophy and the prestigious Ring Magazine title, all before his 16th professional bout.
To cap off his cruiserweight reign, Usyk travelled to the UK to face Tony Bellew—a fan favourite and former WBC champion—on British soil. Despite Bellew’s early success, Usyk adjusted and delivered a devastating eighth-round knockout, leaving no doubt that he was the undisputed king of the cruiserweights. With the division conquered, Usyk vacated his belts and set his sights on the ultimate prize: heavyweight glory.
Joshua v Usyk: Arrival at the Heavyweight Elite
After moving up to heavyweight, Usyk made a seismic impact in 2021 by defeating unified champion Anthony Joshua at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Despite being the smaller man, Usyk’s footwork, head movement, and tactical brilliance left the British powerhouse frustrated and outclassed over 12 rounds. It was a masterclass in movement, and the unanimous decision marked the arrival of a new force in boxing’s most iconic division.
The pair met again 11 months later in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, where Joshua made adjustments and fought with more intent—but it wasn’t enough. Usyk weathered the pressure, found second wind in the championship rounds, and secured another points victory, solidifying his hold on the WBA, WBO, and IBF titles. The back-to-back wins silenced doubters and elevated Usyk’s status from contender to champion.
Fury v Usyk: Undisputed Glory
If defeating Joshua made Usyk a star, conquering Tyson Fury made him a legend. Their first bout, held in May 2024, was a clash of styles and mindsets—Fury the towering, unpredictable showman; Usyk the calm, calculated technician. After a cagey start, Usyk took control in round nine, landing a brutal combination that forced a standing count. The momentum shift was decisive, and Usyk edged the split decision to become the first undisputed heavyweight champion of the four-belt era.
They met again that December in an eagerly anticipated rematch. Fury fought with renewed focus, but Usyk’s timing and accuracy once again shone through. In another razor-close contest, the judges returned a unanimous decision in Usyk’s favour—confirming his supremacy and handing Fury his first professional defeat.
What’s Next?: Oleksandr Usyk vs Daniel Dubois II
With the IBF title recently vacated, Daniel Dubois is now a reigning world champion—and hungry for revenge. Usyk’s upcoming rematch with Dubois at Wembley Stadium on Saturday 19 July 2025 promises another night of drama, legacy, and world-class boxing.
