An Evening with Philippe Albert & Friends

On Wednesday, 20th November 2024, the Hilton Newcastle Gateshead played host to a night of football nostalgia and camaraderie as Gala Hospitality presented An Evening with Philippe Albert & Friends. This memorable event reunited stars from Newcastle United’s “Entertainers” era, offering fans a unique glimpse into one of the most thrilling periods in the club’s history.

Philippe Albert: A Cult Hero Reflects

Philippe Albert, the Belgian international known for his audacious attacking flair as a centre-back, took centre stage alongside his former teammates Steve Watson, John Beresford, and Darren Peacock. Hosted by the charismatic Pete Graves of Sky Sports, the evening was a celebration of the players who brought excitement and joy to the St. James’ Park faithful during Kevin Keegan’s legendary tenure.

Albert shared heartfelt reflections on his time at Newcastle United, proclaiming Kevin Keegan and Terry McDermott as extraordinary motivators who transformed him as both a player and a person. He recalled how the duo would actively join training sessions, pushing themselves as hard as the players, creating an environment of mutual respect and relentless effort. “I wouldn’t be the player I turned out to be, or the person I am today, without Keegan,” Albert said, his admiration clear.

Unforgettable Memories

The night was packed with stories that delighted the audience. Albert reminisced about his iconic chip over Peter Schmeichel in Newcastle’s famous 5-0 victory over Manchester United, a moment that epitomised his ability and flair. His fellow defender Darren Peacock also reflected on his role in that unforgettable game, including his rare goal in the demolition of the Red Devils.

John Beresford and Steve Watson added their own perspectives, highlighting the team’s camaraderie and the high-octane football that made them so beloved. Watson, Newcastle’s youngest-ever debutant, shared anecdotes about his goals and the dressing room at St. James’ Park, while Beresford spoke about his attacking partnership with Warren Barton that was a key part of “The Entertainers” style.

A Celebration of Passion and Legacy

Guests at the Hilton Newcastle Gateshead enjoyed a delicious three-course dinner before settling in for the Q&A session. The players also shared their hopes for Newcastle United’s future, with Albert expressing his belief that the club’s current trajectory could lead to some glory days ahead.

The evening also paid tribute to the unique bond between the players and the fans. Albert’s famous chant, “Philippe, Philippe Albert, everyone knows his name,” echoed through the room, reminding everyone of the special connection that made this era unforgettable.

A Night to Treasure

An Evening with Philippe Albert & Friends was more than just a nostalgic trip down memory lane. It was a heartfelt celebration of what made Newcastle United’s “Entertainers” era so special: passion, flair, and an unyielding love for the game.
