Birmingham World Cup Big Screen Event

Join us in the Horton Suite at the Burlington Hotel in Birmingham for a major football dinner and screening, featuring England’s crucial second group game between England and the USA.

We are thrilled to welcome two Premier League and England stars as our very special guests. Former Leicester City, Liverpool, Birmingham City and Villa striker Emile Heskey will be joined by former Liverpool and England wing wizard John Barnes in what is sure to be a captivating evening!

Our guests will be previewing the match and England’s prospects in the tournament, as well as discussing their own stellar careers along with our Sky Sports host for the day, Dave Fulton. The event will include a delicious three course dinner, memorabilia auction and raffle, giant screen coverage of the big match and analysis from our VIP guests with our Sky Sports presenter.

England vs USA: England will face the USA in their crucial second World Cup group game at the Al Bayt Stadium. This will be the third time in World Cup history that England and the USA have met, the first coming in 1950 when the US famously beat England 1-0. More recently, the two sides faced off in the 2010 World Cup in the group stage, with the match ending in a 1-1 draw, the Three Lions will be desperate to register a first World Cup victory against their opponents. Led by Harry Kane, England will start strong favourites replete with world class players, but the States have a few class acts of their own including the likes of Chelsea star Christian Pulisic, Dortmund starlet Giovanni Reyna and Barcelona full back Sergino Dest. It should be a cracking match!

Emile Heskey: After bursting onto the scene at 17 at Leicester City, Emile quickly cemented his place, enjoying a fruitful spell with the club including 2 League Cups, scoring 46 goals in 197 appearances, and breaking into the England squad. Long term admirers Liverpool snapped him up for a club record £11 million in March 2000, and he enjoyed immediate success as the Reds won an unprecedented FA Cup, League Cup and UEFA Cup hat-trick in 2000/01. The most prolific season of Emile’s career, he bagged 22 goals in 56 games, forming a lethal partnership with Michael Owen, who he partnered to famously destroy Germany 1-5 away in Munich in September 2001. In over 4 years at Anfield he played 223 matches, scoring 60 goals, adding a second League cup in 2003! His England career flourished as despite not being prolific his all-round play and work ethic were crucial to the team. He played in two World Cups in 2002 and 2010 and Euro 2004, winning an impressive 62 caps with 7 goals. Later club spells with Birmingham City, Wigan Athletic, Aston Villa, Newcastle Jets and Bolton Wanderers saw him extend his career to 22 seasons, with 164 career goals in 786 appearances.

John Barnes: One of the most naturally gifted wingers in the history of English football, John’s early career was spent at Watford, where he was under the watchful eye of managerial great Graham Taylor. He went on to become a legend at Vicarage Road, playing almost 300 games in all competitions, scoring 85 goals and becoming a regular England international. With Liverpool the dominant side in British football, it was no surprise when Kenny Dalglish made Barnes his marquee signing. Playing alongside some of the greatest players to don the shirt, John quickly became an integral part of the side; he was a key player in the side which won the 1987/88 title, playing 38 times and scoring 15 goals, winning both the Footballer of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year Awards. John went on to win the League title again in 1989/90, with other trophies including the FA Cup in the tragic Hillsborough year of 1989, and again in 1991. In total, he appeared 403 times for Liverpool in all competitions, scoring 106 goals. John also represented England for over a decade (79 caps/11 goals), playing in the 1986 and 1990 World Cup Finals, and the 1988 European Championships. Inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame in 2005, John was also named in the PFA Team of the Century.

DavE Fulton:  DavE enjoyed a 15 year career with Kent, playing in 200 First Class matches with an average in the high 30s, and over 100 one day games. His best season came in 2001, when he scored an incredible 1892 First Class runs at an average of just under 76, being crowned PCA Player of the Year. Since retiring from the game in 2006, DavE has forged a career as a cricket journalist and event host, appearing regularly on Sky Sports’ cricket coverage. In 1993 he took the catch to dismiss Viv Richards in his final First Class innings! A huge football fan, DavE has previously hosted our Long Room Lunch and Birmingham Gold Cup Lunch on numerous occasions as well as last year’s Euro 2020 screening featuring England and the Czech Republic.

Burlington Hotel: Superbly located right in the centre of Birmingham just opposite New Street Station, the 4* Burlington Hotel offers a fantastic large banqueting space, the Horton Suite. The Horton Suite boast excellent amenities and tasteful décor with dedicated bar facilities, private VIP entrance and chandelier lighting.
