And few fighters embody the spirit of the heavyweight division quite like Joseph Parker. Calm, powerful and relentlessly determined, Parker has established himself as one of the most respected and resilient competitors in world boxing. A former WBO Heavyweight Champion, the New Zealand star has shared the ring with some of the sport’s biggest names and continues to prove himself as a major force in the division.

With his explosive power, durability and ever-growing resume of top-level fights, Parker remains firmly in the heavyweight title conversation. As the division enters another exciting era, Gala invites you to take a closer look at the career, achievements and journey of one of boxing’s most exciting modern heavyweights.

The Wilder Victory: A Defining Moment

Heading into his bout with Deontay Wilder, Parker was seen as the underdog, with plans already in place for Wilder to face Anthony Joshua next. However, Parker flipped the script in spectacular fashion, outmanoeuvring the “Bronze Bomber” with superior footwork, defensive awareness, and precision punches. Most impressively, Parker avoided Wilder’s vaunted right hand, earning a unanimous decision win and sending shockwaves through the heavyweight division.

A Gritty Win Over Zhilei Zhang

Parker’s next challenge came in March 2024 against WBO Interim World Champion Zhilei Zhang. Despite being knocked down twice, Parker’s superior stamina and work rate wore Zhang down in the later rounds. He secured a majority decision victory, further solidifying his position as a top heavyweight contender.

Bouncing Back from Defeat

Following his sole stoppage loss to Joe Joyce in 2022, Parker embarked on an active 2023 campaign, fighting four times to stay sharp and regain his confidence. His victories in Riyadh have established the city as a lucky ground for Parker, who defeated Simon Kean in three rounds on the undercard of Tyson Fury vs. Francis Ngannou to maintain his momentum.

These performances affirm Parker’s standing as a dangerous and crafty adversary in the heavyweight division. He combines elite conditioning with sound fundamentals, able to adjust mid-fight and exploit openings when they arise.

Notably, in March 2025 the WBO issued a mandatory defence order asking Oleksandr Usyk to negotiate a title match with Parker, confirming that the boxer remains deeply relevant to the top tier of heavyweight title contention.

Parker v Wardley | 25 October 2025 | The O2 Arena, London

Former world champion Joseph Parker faced rising British heavyweight Fabio Wardley in a dramatic clash at The O2 Arena, with the WBO interim heavyweight title on the line. Parker started strongly, using his jab and movement to control the early rounds and land the cleaner punches. The New Zealander appeared to be edging ahead on the scorecards as the fight reached the later stages, but Wardley remained dangerous with his trademark power.

The momentum shifted in the tenth round when Wardley began landing heavier shots, energising the London crowd. Sensing the opportunity, the British contender pressed forward in round eleven and unleashed a powerful flurry that forced the referee to stop the contest. Wardley secured a dramatic 11th-round TKO victory, claiming the biggest win of his career and moving firmly into the heavyweight title picture. Parker showed trademark toughness throughout but was ultimately unable to withstand Wardley’s late surge in one of the year’s most exciting heavyweight battles.
