Don’t forget to check out our upcoming Sporting Dinners!
Gala clients at Edgbaston enjoyed a super day, as England took on Sri Lanka in the Fifth and final One Day International. Our star guests for the event were former England spinner and TV star Phil Tuffnell, and livewire former Leicestershire and England wicket-keeper Paul Nixon. The two proved quite a double act, entertaining everyone present with some hilarious tales from their respective careers.
The match itself did not disappoint, England making a good start after batting first, Cook and Bell putting on 76 for the first wicket in 15 overs. However, England then lost wickets at regular intervals, labouring to 219 all out with 11 balls of the innings left, a target that always looked 20 or 30 short.
A good start with the ball saw England reduce the visitors to 62-3, with James Tredwell bagging a couple of wickets. Unfortunately for England, Jayawardene and Thirimanne then bedded in, effectively taking the match away from England with a stand of 98, before big-hitting Angelo Mathews came in to smash 42 off 32 balls to see Sri Lanka home.
It was a fantastic day all round, and our thanks go to Phil and Paul for being such good sports, and and to our clients for making the event a memorable one.
