T20 Finals Day is one of the most widely anticipated events on the cricketing calendar, and this year the competition was won by a rampant Birmingham Bears side, after a stunning day of big hitting. Gala’s guests had the added bonus of having a very special speaker in Jonathan Trott, the Warwickshire and England opener. As usual, the service and catering for our Edgbaston hospitality experience was top notch, and the views of the action from the hospitality suite balcony were amongst the best in the ground.
On the pitch, the home side did the business in spectacular fashion, with some thunderous hitting and great bowling. The semi-final clash against a strong Surrey side saw the Bears claim a relatively comfortable 16 run victory, with Will Porterfield hitting an incredible 81 runs off only 47 deliveries to help his side triumph.
The showpiece final brought Lancashire into the fray, and this was a much tighter affair with the Bears squeezing home by just 4 runs. The Bears batted first and set a challenging target of 181, with Laurie Evans top scoring with 51. In reply, Lancashire put in a great performance, but despite late heroics from a rejuvenated Andrew Flintoff with 20 not out from 8 balls, Lancashire fell short by 4 runs ending on 177.
It was a superb day, one which will live long in the memory, as the jubilant home fans celebrated into the night.
