Edgbaston T20 Finals Day Hospitality is always fantastic and one of our favourite cricketing occasions, and 2024’s amazing day of cricketing action did not disappoint.
The stunning Wyatt Suite opened at 9am to allow our guests to enjoy a delicious breakfast before the cricketing action began at 11am with Surrey against Somerset in the first semi-final. The action on the pitch was intense and reigning champions Somerset emerged victorious, winning the match by 6 wickets after coming back from 7-3. This was a gripping match which featured an incredible array of cricketing talent and some top performances. After the conclusion of the first match our guests took the chance to take a break from the action by enjoying a superb lunch, served by the always fantastic staff at Edgbaston.
The second match was Sussex v Gloucestershire, with the side from the South-West winning out in a rather one-sided contest and setting up a Westcountry derby in the final. Sussex Sharks were bowled out for just 106 runs and Gloucestershire batted sensibly to chase the target down with ease, eventually finishing their own innings on 109-2 in just 13.4 overs. Our T20 Finals Day Hospitality continued, as afternoon tea was served following the conclusion of the second match, and we were also joined in the lounge by our two special guests. This year we were thrilled to be joined by England bowling icons in the form of Spin legend Ashley Giles and right-arm fast bowler Dominic Cork.
Ashley Giles spoke about his career and the current England set-up, with stories such as how Kevin Pietersen nicknamed him ‘George’ during the famous 2025 Ashes series due to the appearance of grey hairs reminding the all-rounder of acting legend George Clooney! With regard to the current England set-up Ashley gave his thoughts and opinions in particular on the spin bowlers in contention for the upcoming tour to Pakistan and how important they will be in the series overall.
Dominic Cork also reminisced on his career before turning his thoughts to the much-discussed Bazball approach of the England test side. His opinion was positive overall, but he did mention how he would like to see a specialist opener at the top of the order and how the approach could be refined slightly to achieve a better balance in some matches.
As our special guests concluded their thoughts the players began to make their way out for the final. In what was an intriguing match Gloucestershire beat the reigning champions to seal their first win in the competition and cap another remarkable finals day. The match finished with Somerset having posted a below-par 126 batting first and Gloucestershire chasing it down in 15 overs with only 2 wickets down. An incredible moment for the South-West side was enjoyed all-round the now floodlit stadium and our guests seemed to enjoy every moment of it!
We hope everyone had an incredible day of T20 Finals Day Hospitality and we look forward to seeing everyone next year for another amazing day of cricket!
